Walk On Water Ministries

Young Life Capernaum Trip - July 20 - 26, 2008

Walk On Water Ministries is working with the QCA Young Life Group in helping take the WOW bus full of people to a special Young Life camp called Capernaum in Virginia Beach, VA July 20th - 26th, 2008.  It is a camp for mentally and physically challenged high school students.  For every participant, another teen or adult needs to be signed up as their 'Buddy'.

Young Life Camps are top-notch facilities with many wonderful amenities that will make this one of the 'best weeks of your life.'  There are daily schedules to follow which include fun races, games, water games, etc.  To read more about this opportunity, go to: http://www.younglife.org/Capernaum.    Here are other sites that will help you find out more about it.

To see the actual campsite, amenities, answers to your questions,  just cut and paste into your web server: http://sites.younglife.org/camps/Rockbridge.   To read witnesses of camp experience and see the local Rockbridge Club's website, just cut and paste: http://www.younglife.org/Voices/Stories/Capernaum/.  The participant's Buddy will help them through all of the activities and a deep bond will hopefully come between them.  There are state of the art 'cabins' for sleeping; tons of the best food you could ever eat served up by teen volunteers, dances and parties at night and the Gospel Message preached everyday.  There is also a camp doctor on hand at all times, and the specific needs of each participant will be met.   The Beauty of the Buddy System  kids with disabilities spend a week at camp with “camp buddies” — teenagers from around the country who help them have the best week of their lives.
Of course, the more disabled the participant is, the less he/she will be able to do and this might not be the camp for them.  Watching others go down the zip line or run through an obstacle course might make them feel left out.  There is a camp available through Easter Seals that is help locally called "Independence Camp" that might be a better option for highly challenged students.  But don't rule them out from an invitation, we will let them and their parents decide what is right for them.

We will be leaving the morning of July 20th and driving as far as Kentucky.  There we will stay overnight (two participants along with their Buddy per room.)  On the 21st we will finish the trip, arrive early-mid afternoon and let the participants get settled in their rooms.  The Buddies will stay in the cabin rooms with the participants.  The camp officially begins that afternoon and goes through the 25th.  After that, we will return home, stopping at a hotel for the night as we did on the way there and be home sometime on the 26th.

The cost will be approximately $500 - $550 and there are several fund raisers that anyone going can participate in to cut down that cost.  1. A car wash in the spring; 2. Flower sales (they receive a large portion of what they sell; and 3. A chance to get into the QC Airshow free and work at a vending booth.  (Anyone working might make as much as 40-50 each of the 2 days).  and 4. Beginning immediately - Coffee Sales: you receive $5.00 for every pound of coffee you sell - easy and quick!  (Some have already earned more than half of their trip fees!)

The local groups can also do our own fundraising such as getting the student's church to sponsor him/her; having a garage sale; selling t-shirts at the Music Festival Craft Show, sending out sponsorship letters, etc.

We plan on having around 3 fun get-togethers in the spring to help everyone get acquainted and feel comfortable with each other before the trip.  Those events are TBD.  There will be a 'Capernaum Young Life' Club formed after the trip so everyone can keep in touch and invite others to join in on the fun.

Standing Rock Indian Reservation - June 29 - July 5 2008

NOTE:  THERE WAS A MISPRINT ON THE ACTUAL DEPARTURE DATE FOR THE SOUTH DAKOTA MISSION TRIP!   It should be:
Saturday, June 28th 6:00 am - Saturday, July 5th around 12:00 midnight.
THIS TRIP IS ALMOST FULL!  THE FIRST 40 COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL TEENS WITH THEIR MONEY AND PERMISSION FORMS IN WILL BE SIGNED UP FOR SURE.

Mission Trip to the Reservation this summer. The trip will consist of 10 adults and 40 teens. Last year the cost of $350 covered fuel for the bus and truck pulling the trailer full of supplies for the Bible School, work projects, our food and snacks. We will need to recalculate the cost of fuel to see if we will be able to maintain that cost for this year. The approximate cost of $350 may have to be raised to as much as $400, as stated earlier.  Spots will filled be on a first come, first paid with signed forms turned in basis.  Payment schedule:  $100 downpayment due Feb. 1st;  $100 due March 1st; $100 due April 1st; and balance (approximately $50 - $100) due May 1st.  Please consider sending letters out for sponsors to help defray your cost.  Cost for adults is a suggested $200 tax-deductible donation. We are also gathering nice donated items to have a garage sale there to raise money for a building fund to replace a church that burned down. Pictures are available upon request to give you an idea of how desolate the area is and how happy they are to have us there.
